Spring 2015, EDEL 350/ Immersive Learning
Reflection:
A teacher understands and uses a variety of assessments. Because assessments should be used to monitor the growth of the students, students should not be penalized for formative assessment. The teacher should use the results from these ongoing assessments to adjust their teaching to fit the needs of their students.
In my practicum experience, I was fortunate enough to have a classroom teacher who practiced this principle. Because she understood that her students would only learn if she taught to their needs, she frequently evaluated them to understand what she needed to do to help them be successful. Often times, this consisted of conferencing with individual students. This one-on-one interaction allowed her to develop meaningful relationships with her students that made them more cooperative and reduced behavior issues. When tutoring, I used InTASC Standard 6 when I performed the pre and post-assessments. Through these different types of assessments, I was able to document my student’s progress and adapt my teaching methods to fit his needs.
In my future classroom, I plan on using InTASC Standard 6 on a daily basis. I believe in conferencing with students and allowing them to help me come up with a method for teaching them appropriately. By giving students the power to assist in their education, you empower them to take pride in their educational success. Also, I believe in using a variety of summative assessments. These will consist of students making a commercial, poster, PowerPoint, Prezi, or skit about what they have learned.
