Spring 2015, EDEL 350/ Immersive Learning
Reflection:
A teacher understands how students grow in and out of the classroom. By knowing the developmental patterns of children, teachers can adapt their lesson plans to fit the needs of the students. Understanding how students learn and develop allows teachers to challenge students while providing them with the appropriate support.
Throughout my immersive experience, I have used InTASC Standard 1 mostly in my tutoring experience. When working with my young student, I had to not only understand the norms for his age, but also how his disability affected his literacy development. By understanding how this student has developed, I was able to identify best practices to assist and challenge him.
In the future, I will constantly utilize InTASC Standard 1 when I am planning for my students. I will base my lessons on the grade level and on the individual levels of my students. As an educator that will base her instruction on the individual child, I will not assume that all of my students are performing at the same level. By adapting my lessons to meet all of my students’ needs, I can provide them with developmentally appropriate challenges and supports.
