Spring 2015, EDEL 350/ Immersive Learning
Reflection:
A teacher understands how to motivate students. By engaging students in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving, you can assist them in making real-world connections that make the lessons more meaningful. Through an authentic education, students are more likely to retain and benefit from information.
This semester, I constantly witnessed my practicum classroom teacher making connections for the students. Because she understood that many of her students had never been out of the state they live in, she made an effort to broaden their horizons and bring the world to them. I saw this spark the imagination in students as they began to ask questions and be fully involved with the class discussion. She used frequently used videos and pictures to show students the world beyond their community.
In my classroom, I will frequently have class discussions that help my students make real-world connections. During these times, I can encourage them to think critically and share their ideas with peers. Also, I will give my students authentic assignments that help them to become better citizens of the world.
