Hello, I am Hannah Roseann Lugar. I am a freshman at Ball State University and I am dual majoring in Elementary and Special Education. I was drawn to BSU when I heard how great their education department was. I was driven to be a part of a program that not only educated me, but also pushed me to be the best I could be.
I am originally from the small town of Portland, Indiana. Although Portland is only forty minutes away from Muncie, they are nothing alike. My hometown is made up of cornfields, a Wal-Mart, a hospital, a few schools, several churches, and a McDonald’s. My high school was made up of approximately 1,500 students. Needless to say, Muncie was a huge change for me. Although I miss my home, I am excited to explore new parts of the world.
All my life, I have been surrounded by a great support system. My parents are both currently employed by the Jay School Corporation. My mother, who has taught me how to be independent, is a school cook. My father, who has shown me how to stand up for what I believe in, is a janitor. I also have two older siblings, who have kids of their own, and twin sisters who are younger than me. All of these people have helped to mold me into the person I am today.
I have chosen to go into the field of Elementary and Special Education because I love kids and I love being the person to make a change in a child’s life. Although many see Special Education as a difficult field to go into, I see it as an opportunity to improve the quality of my students’ lives. I began gaining interest in Special Education when I did my high school Cadet Teaching in an Elementary Special Education classroom. Seeing the kids react to your smile, kick you to get your attention, and work harder than most of their peers without a disability, made me feel like I had finally found my purpose. Although some situations were stressful, I always left the class feeling like I had made a change. Overall, Special Education is my opportunity to give back to the world as I teach the next generation.
